Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses američki je hard rock sastav koji je krajem 80-ih i početkom 90-ih godina svojom glazbom, koja je bila mješavina rocka, bluesa, punka, glam rocka i heavy metala, nekoliko uspješnih albuma, spektakularnim koncertima, kao i skandalima i tučnjavama, osvojio svjetsku popularnost. Danas je Axl Rose jedini preostali član izvornih Gunsa.

Povijest sastava

Guns N' Roses kalifornijski je hard rock bend koji su u Los Angelesu u lipnju 1985. godine osnovali pjevač William Axl Rose, gitaristi Tracii Guns i Izzy Stradlin, basist Ole Beich (kojega je zamijenio Duff McKagan) i bubnjar Rob Gardner. Ime benda nastalo je spajanjem dvaju sastava iz kojih su originalni članovi došli: Hollywood Rose i L.A. Guns.

Počeci ranih '80-ih

Priča počinje početkom '80-ih kada su školski kolege Axl Rose i Izzy Stradlin iz svoga rodnog grada Lafayette (Indiana) doselili u velegrad Los Angeles. Godine 1983. Axl i Stradlin osnovali su bend "Rose" koji je kasnije preimenovan u "Hollywood Rose", a ostali članovi bili su: gitarist Chris Weber, basist Andre Roxx i bubnjar Johnny Kreis. Godinu dana kasnije razilaze se i Axl pristupa "L.A. Gunsima", a Stradlin bendu "London", da bi se ponovno 1985. godine ujedinili pod imenom "Guns N' Roses".

Guns i Gardner napustili su bend iste godine, a njih su zamijenili poznanici McKagana: Saul Hudson - Slash (lead gitara) i Steven Adler (bubnjevi), koji je prije svirao u Road Crew. S tom postavom počinju osvajati publiku i iste godine izdan je i album u vlastitoj limitiranoj (10.000 primjeraka) produkciji "Live ?!*@Like A Suicide" na kojem su bile i dvije obrade drugih bendova i dvije autorske pjesme. Nekoliko godina nakon izdavanja ovog albuma, otkriveno je da su Gn'R snimili sve četiri pjesme u studiju, ali su dodali zvuk publike da bi se stvorila atmosfera uživo.

Kasne '80-e

Godine 1986. poznata izdavačka kuća Geffen Records ponudila je sastavu ugovor (istodobno je otvorena i suradnja s nezavisnom produkcijskom kućom Uzi-Suicide). Krajem srpnja 1987. godine izlazi Apetite For Destruction, koji u početku nije bio dobro prihvaćen i s coverom koji je izgledao kao scena silovanja. Nakon toga cover je promijenjen, a izvorni je postao raritet i vrijedan kod sakupljača. No ni nakon toga prodaja nije zabilježila osjetan porast, sve do objavljivanja videospota "Sweet Child O'Mine" na MTV-u. U kolovozu 1988. g. album je dospio na br. 1 US ljestvicu albuma s prodanih 20 milijuna primjeraka. Tako su pjesme s tog albuma "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" i "Sweet Child O´Mine" bile top ten singlova na Billboard charts (listi). Do danas je Appetite For Destruction najbolje prodavan debitantski album svih vremena.

Nakon velike turneje po Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama , u jesen 1988. g. uslijedio je poziv na Monsters of Rock festival u Europi na kojem su nastupali s ostalim poznatim grupama kao što su Iron Maiden , KISS i Judas Priest.

Pozornost medija počelo je privlačiti i ponašanje članova benda pod utjecajem droge i alkohola (McKagan, Slash i Adler), a tijekom Monsters of Rock koncerta u Velikoj Britaniji poginula su dva obožavatelja za vrijeme skakanja i naguravanja, međutim Gunsi nisu znali za taj tragičan događaj do kraja koncerta. Svejedno je sastav za vrijeme Appetite for Destruction turneje zaradio naslov "najopasnijeg benda na svijetu".

Pjesma "Welcome to the Jungle" izašla je na soundtracku za film The Dead Pool, petom filmu o inspektoru Harryu Callahanu poznatijem kao prljavi Harry (Dirty Harry).

Iste godine objavljen je G'N'R Lies album, zapravo EP, s četiri pjesme iz '86. g. i četiri pjesme iz ´88. g. odsvirane s akustičnim gitarama ("Patience", "Used To Love Her", "You´re Crazy", "One In A Million". Izvorni naziv albuma trebao je biti Lies! The Sex, The Drugs, The Violence, The Shocking Truth, što nije odgovaralo izdavačkoj kući. Pjesma "One in a Million" izazvala je žestoke kritike zbog svog rasističkog sadržaja, a Slash je na koncertima odbijao svirati tu pjesmu jer se i sam osjećao pogođen s obzirom da je dijete afroamerikanke i židova. Sve to ipak nije poremetilo uspjeh sastava i bili su jedini bend 80-ih godina s istovremeno dva albuma na Top 5.

U kolovozu 1989. g. u zračnoj luci Phoenix, Arizona, Izzy Stradlin uhićen je zbog kršenja javnog reda, a Steve Adler ima problema s prekomjernim uživanjem droge, koji je na koncu 1990. g. zbog toga i izbačen iz benda. Njega je zamijenio Matt Sorum, bivši bubnjar grupe The Cult i još se pridružio Dizzy Reed na klavijaturama. To je bilo teško razdoblje u kojem su nekako prebrodili razne krize i održali četiri koncerta u Los Angelesu kao predgrupa legendarnim The Rolling Stonesima.

Vrhunac karijere (1991. - 1993.)

Razdoblje najvećih uspjeha započinje 23. siječnja 1991. g. nastupom na Rock in Rio-Festivalu u Rio de Janeiru (Brazil) pred više od 260.000 posjetitelja. Nakon toga počela je u svibnju velika svjetska turneja koja je trajala punih 28 mjeseci.

Gunse su i dalje pratili razni incidenti pa tako i poznati St. Louis Incident, koji se dogodio 2. srpnja u St. Louisu (Missouri), Axl je skočio s pozornice na obožavatelja koji je imao nož ili videokameru (podaci se ne poklapaju), međutim svjedoci su potvrđivali da Axl nikada nije dohvatio tog obožavatelja. No nakon toga Axl se vratio na pozornicu, optužio osiguranje za propuste i prekinuo koncert. Videosnimku toga događaja možete vidjeti ovdje. Prekid koncerta izazvao je pravu buru negodovanja, a neredi su završili s povrijeđenima. Posljedica svega je bila da je sastav ostao bez kompletne opreme, a Axl je morao odgovarati pred sudom zbog uzrokovanja teških nereda. Ovaj slučaj samo je potvrdio loš glas grupe kao skandalozne i nepouzdane, a i mediji su se okrenuli protiv njih.

Napokon, nakon dugih najava i tijekom turneje 17. rujna 1991. izlaze Use Your Illusion I i Use Your Illusion II albumi. Ova dva albuma nose nešto mekši zvuk i neke od najuspješnijih rock balada '90-ih godina. Pjesme, odnosno videospotovi "Don´t Cry", "November Rain" [1] i "Estranged" čine neku vrstu trilogije, koji na kraju nisu napravljeni po prvobitnoj zamisli zbog otezanja i pomicanja rokova (a i prekida Axla Rosea sa Stephanie Seymour). Na kraju videospota "November Rain" piše da se temelji na priči "Without You" objavljenoj u knjizi "The Language Of Fear" pisca horora Dela Jamesa, inače dobrog prijatelja Axla Rosea (priču možete pročitati ovdje). Ta tri videospota spadaju i među najskuplje ikada napravljene, a odskaču i svojim trajanjem.

Neposredno prije izlaska albuma Izzy Stradlin napušta bend (navodno zbog njegovog mišljenja da Gn'R trebaju nastaviti svirati uživo samo po klubovima, a ne ići na velike turneje i čiste komercijalizacije), a zamjenjuje ga gitarist Gilby Clarke.

Pjesma "You Could Be Mine" napravljena je za filmski hit iz 1991. godine Terminator 2: Sudnji dan s Arnoldom Schwarzeneggerom u glavnoj ulozi i u videospotu se izmjenjuje nastup Gunsa sa scenama i brojnim efektima iz filma.


Godine 1992. Gn'R nastupaju i na Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert izvodeći "Paradise City" i "Knockin' on Heaven's Door", Axl i Queen izvode "We Will Rock You" i neponovljiva "Bohemian Rhapsody" u duetu Axla i Eltona Johna. Iste godine na MTV Video Music Award Elton John pratio je Gunse na glasoviru u pjesmi "November Rain".

U kolovozu 1992. za vrijeme miniturneje s heavy metal bendom Metallica na Montreal´s Olympic Stadiumu, frontmen Metallice James Hetfield pretrpio je opekline prišavši preblizu pirotehnici. Metallica je otkazala svoj dio nastupa, Gn'R su trebali odraditi svoj dio, ali su izveli svega nekoliko pjesama, Axl se izvlačio na probleme s glasom i, naravno, opet su nastali neredi. Na koncertu u Tokiju snimljeni su materijali za DVD na kojima su, među ostalim, izvrsne solo dionice Soruma i Slashova solo izvedba teme iz filma The Godfather .

Povijesna turneja završila je u Buenos Airesu (Argentina), 17. srpnja 1993. nakon gotovo tri godine i više od 200 nastupa. Posljednji nastup u Buenos Airesu bio je i posljednji zajednički nastup najuspješnije postave Guns N' Rosesa. Detaljni pregled turneje možete pogledati ovdje.

The Kooks are an English rock band from Brighton. The Kooks' name originated from the David Bowie song "Kooks" from the album Hunky Dory. The Kooks' debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, spent more than half of 2006 in the UK Top 20 and has sold more than 1,000,000 copies in the UK. The group released Inside In/Inside Out and went on its first US tour in October 2006, selling out shows both in New York and Los Angeles.

The Kooks consists of Luke Pritchard, Max Rafferty, Hugh Harris and Paul Garred. The band formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Muse are a popular Brit Award-winning English rock band formed while at Teignmouth Community College in Teignmouth, Devon in 1992. Their idiosyncratic style is a blend of alternative rock, electronica, classical music, heavy metal and progressive rock. The band is famed for its energetic live performances (winning numerous Best Live Act awards) and frontman Matthew Bellamy's eccentric interests in global conspiracy, extraterrestrial life, theology and the apocalypse. Muse consists of Matthew Bellamy, Dominic Howard, and Chris Wolstenholme. Muse have sold over 7 million albums worldwide. As of the release of their fourth album, Morgan Nicholls assists the band during live performances, providing additional keyboards, samples and backing vocals. He previously played bass in a few live performances due to Wolstenholme getting injured.[1]

History


(1992-1997) Formation and early years

The members of Muse were in separate bands at Teignmouth Community College in the early 1990s. The formation of Muse began after 14 year old Matthew Bellamy successfully auditioned for the part of guitarist in Dominic Howard's band. They were left with a dilemma when their second guitarist Phys Vandit decided to leave, so they asked close friend Chris Wolstenholme to learn to play the bass guitar. The band changed names a number of times after this, cycling through names such as Gothic Plague, Carnage Mayhem, Fixed Penalty, and Rocket Baby Dolls, before adopting the name Muse (the chronology of these names is unclear, as Muse has given contradictory accounts in various interviews).

In 1994, under the name Altostrata and with a Gothic/glam image, the group won a local battle of the bands contest, trashing their gear in the process (they were "the only real rock band" there).[2][3] Shortly after this win the band decided to forgo university and take on a living as professional musicians. They changed their name to Muse and started playing concerts in local clubs like the Cavern in Exeter.

(1998-2000) First EPs and Showbiz

After a few years building a fan base in London, they played their first gigs in London and Manchester. The band had a significant meeting with Dennis Smith, the owner of Sawmills, a recording studio in a converted water mill in Cornwall, S.W. England.

This meeting led to their first proper recordings and the release of a self-titled E.P. on Sawmill's in-house Dangerous label. Their second E.P., the Muscle Museum EP, attracted the attention of influential British music journalist Steve Lamacq and the weekly British music publication NME. Dennis Smith subsequently co-founded the music production company Taste Media especially for Muse (the band stayed with Taste Media for their first 3 albums). This was fortunate for the band, as it allowed them to preserve the individuality of their sound in the early stages of their career.

Despite the success and acclaim of their second E.P., British record companies were reluctant to back Muse, and many sections of the music industry were concerned that their sound was too similar to that of Radiohead (circa The Bends). However, the American Maverick Records arranged a number of gigs in the United States before signing them at the end of 1998. Upon their return from America, Taste Media arranged deals for Muse with various record labels in Europe and Australia. John Leckie, who had produced the aforementioned The Bends, the Stone Roses, "Weird Al" Yankovic and The Verve, was brought in to produce the band's first record, Showbiz. The album showcased the band's aggressive style, and featured a number of lyrical references to the difficulties they had trying to establish themselves in Teignmouth.[4]

The release of this album was followed by tour support slots for the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers in the United States. 1999 and 2000 saw Muse playing major festivals in Europe and gigs in Australia, accumulating a considerable fan base in Western Europe.

The Departure


The Departure is an English rock band from Northampton, that formed in January 2004. Their debut album, Dirty Words, was released 13 June 2005 by Parlophone.

History

The Departure formed in January 2004 after initially starting life in Northampton as a collaboration between a former Christian commune inhabitant called David Jones (vocals/guitar) and his friend Sam Harvey (guitar)[1]. After recruiting old school associate Ben Winton (bass) and Lee Irons (guitar), the lineup was completed with the addition of Andy Hobson (drums) via a website[2]. Jones described the concept of the band to music webzine Drowned in Sound: "We all got quite excited about the whole ethos of what we’re trying to do, which is to take 1980s reference points and transcend them into modern day, edgy, instant kind of sounds."[3]

The band were signed to Parlophone Records after playing only three gigs and being together for just four months[4], a fact that attracted a not inconsiderable level of derision and scepticism[5]. Touring slots with Placebo, The Tears and a reformed Gang Of Four soon followed as the band sought to build a support base ahead of their first wing of releases. Debut single All Mapped Out was released on August 2nd 2004 and debuted at number 30 on the UK singles chart[6]. Follow up single Be My Enemy emerged on October 18th 2004 and was included on the soundtrack to the FIFA 06 video game.[7]

The Departure released their debut album ‘Dirty Words’, produced by Steve Osborne (who has also worked with New Order, Suede and Happy Mondays), a year after signing to Parlophone. The album was trailed the week before its release by the reissue of the All Mapped Out single, which disappointingly charted lower than the original[8]. The album itself drew a mostly middling response from critics[9], who varied between praising the album for its bleak, futuristic atmosphere[10] and slating it for its perceived superficiality and over-reliance on the music of the 80s for inspiration[11].

A UK tour and festival appearances followed soon after. In early 2006, it was announced that guitarist Lee Irons had left the band citing artistic differences[12]. This news was followed by the announcement that drummer Andy Hobson had decided to leave in late 2006, with the band claiming the split was amicable. He was replaced by the band's original drummer, Simon Alexander. The four-piece are currently working on the follow-up to Dirty Words in Grouse Lodge Studios, Ireland which is expected to see a release in 2007.
